The Newest GOP Savior

This should come as no surprise, with the choice between "pygmies" the GOP is now looking for its savior de jour.  Romney was supposed to be the savior, but he's too phoney.  Guiliani is well, too Guiliani, and Thompson is apparently either too dumb, too liberal (he was a lobbyist for abortion rights) or not a good enough fundraiser.  The other candidates are just plain crazy.

With the GOP banner in tatters, and the best candidate (Schwarzeneger) being constitutionally unavailable to run, the only place for conservatives to go is outside of the party.  Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the latest GOP savior:

Joseph Lieberman.

This makes sense.  In fact, I snarked this idea just the other day.  Right now there is no issue of greater importance to the GOP primary voter than Iraq.  Of course, there's on issue of greater importance to any voter than Iraq.  But conservatives want to keep the war ongoing.

As a result, I don't think any GOPer will be able use what I call the pincher strategy -- simultaneously moving to the right and left while the Democrat fights for the middle.  For me, the biggest fear is that a true believer moves to the Democratic nominee's left on Iraq, while staying to the right on everything else.  Such a strategy might, maybe, work.  In San Diego, I saw this strategy used to great effect in a mayoral race where the conservative suddenly became really strong on environmental issues, and pulled enough votes from the moderate (Murphy v. Roberts).

Anyway, back to Joementum.  With Iraq being the issue that defines the Democrat v. the Republican, Lieberman is clearly in the GOP camp.  But as the someone who caucuses with the Democrats, he gets the "moderate label."  In other words, the Press would love him.  Lieberman also brings a national name recognition, and a gravitas that the pygmies don't have.

I think Lieberman will go for this as well.  He's someone who clearly craves the spotlight, who has run for President before, and who believes that he is in the right.  Pun intended.  Now that Thompson has been exposed as lacking, expect the chatter to begin on Joe Lieberman, "Democrat" for Republican Nominee. . .

One last thing: like any GOP candidate, Joe Lieberman would get killed in the General Election -- in fact, he'd probably lose badly because he would focus on Iraq more than he should.
